What is Art?

Art is a skill. We are all born at different levels, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t improve. Some may start at a very young age while others may start well into adulthood. The most important thing that must occur when dealing with art is constant practice, be it with paper and pencil or with watercolor and ink. The saying “Practice makes perfect” is pretty literal when creating art because it enables you to better your art style to the point where you don’t have to worry about the potential of losing it in a few days or weeks. Another thing that art is to me is an escape from reality. Problems in life can be very hard to deal with and the need for a distraction can be life-saving.

What is Design?

Design is how a piece of art is going to be structured. It is easily described as the backbone of the artwork since it provides a sort of layout. The design of a piece can be set in stone at the very beginning, but that doesn't mean that you are unable to change it when you getting closer to the end. While there are elements of design that are often instructed in art classes, these are more or less to provide everyone with the most simple examples of how to piece an artwork together. Design should not be feared. While Art may seem more liberating, it actually would be much harder to piece together without the assistance of design. Having a little bit of guidance means the piece is more likely come together in the end as opposed to finishing a piece and feeling that something is missing or even failed to portray.

What is Craft?

Craft is how a person creates an artwork. This can apply to the type of materials used all the way towards the type of technique. The type of style an artist may use when creating a piece almost always reflects the personality of the artist. Craft is more often than not developed by someone that compliments the style in which the artist likes dealing with. However, there is also the type of craft that is passed down from instructor to student. In this case, the craft would not only reflect the style of both the student and their predecessors, but may in time evolve into something even more personal to the artist. Either way, developing a craft will always be special to the person that is learning that way of crafting.
